Interested in working for FLUX, the award-winning student-produced magazine of the SOJC? Well, now is the time to apply for a position and a spot in the winter term course.

 

We’re looking for editors, writers, photographers, video storytellers, digital strategists, and more. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Deadline is Monday, November 4.

IMPORTANT:

FLUX is both a publication and a class offered at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. APPLICANTS MUST COMMIT TO WORK ON FLUX FOR BOTH WINTER AND SPRING TERMS. Selected applicants are required to enroll in J475/J575 FLUX Magazine Production to be on staff. Credit is variable (1 to 5 credits).

To complete the application, you will need:

 
  1. A brief critique of one story or one photo story from the 2023 issue of Flux. In no more than 150 words, tell us where the story/photos succeeded or fell short.

  2. A resume and/or link to your online portfolio. Include where possible samples of three writing/photo samples.

  3. Contact information for two professional references or SOJC professors.

  4. A list of SOJC classes you will have completed by December 31, 2023

  5. A cover letter outlining a) which job/s you’re applying for (see list below); b) your skills and experience; c) what you would bring to the publication; d) your year at the UO and your major.

 

POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF - The Editor-In-Chief supervises all editorial content. That includes assigning stories, managing staff, editing copy and writing a column.

MANAGING EDITOR - Assists editor-in-chief in the operations of Flux. Develops schedules, deadlines and budgets. Works with design team to manage the copy and photography flow. Must be detail-oriented and a stickler for hitting deadlines.

WRITERS - Writers will pitch story ideas, report and write at least one in-depth, long-form article over the course of two terms. They will also contribute shorter features and additional reporting as needed.

PHOTO EDITOR - The photo editor helps direct Flux’s visual coverage and manages a small team of photographers. Photo editor will contribute photos as needed.

PHOTOGRAPHERS - Photographers are responsible for working closely with reporters and editors to capture stories visually. Photographers are also responsible for producing photo essays and additional photography as needed.

MULTIMEDIA/VIDEO PRODUCERS - Multimedia/video producers are responsible for producing compelling visual journalism. Last year, Flux produced several short videos to accompany stories that appeared in print.

PODCASTERS - Flux is eager to build out its podcast and audio team. If you have experience in this area — or want to learn — there will be opportunities to tell great stories.

FACT-CHECKERS - Fact-checkers play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy of the magazine’s content. Fact-checkers are responsible for following-up and verifying information.

SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGISTS - Our digital strategy team will engage our audience through various social media channels.

WEB DESIGNERS - In 2021, Flux redesigned its web site. We’re looking for students who can maintain its energetic new look as well as enhance it.
